About BCC
What a BCC is, and how it's removed.
A basal cell carcinoma (BCC) makes up around 75% of non-melanoma skin cancers leading it to be the most common type of skin cancer with roughly 120,000 new UK diagnoses a year.
BCCs appear most often on the face and other sun-exposed sites, often as a pearly or pink raised spot with tiny surface vessels, or as a sore that bleeds, crusts and won't heal. Although they rarely spread, if left they can grow into and damage nearby tissue so removal is generally advised.
The standard treatment is surgical excision with an appropriate margin of normal skin (guided by national guidance), with everything removed sent for histology.

What is a basal cell carcinoma?+
A BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for around 75% of non-melanoma skin cancers. It grows slowly and can damage nearby tissue if left so removal is advised.
Does a BCC spread?+
BCCs can spread to other parts of the body. The concern is local growth into surrounding tissue, which is why complete removal confirmed by histology is suggested.
What are margins?+
A margin is a small rim of normal-looking skin removed around the cancer to reduce the chance of any being left behind.
Will I need a skin graft or flap?+
Most BCCs are closed with fine stitches. For larger areas, or on the face, your surgeon may reconstruct the gap with a local flap or a skin graft with planning for the most discreet result.
How much does BCC excision cost?+
Your price is confirmed in writing at your consultation and depends on the size, site and extent of the BCC. Surgical excision with margins is the standard treatment, with reconstruction priced on assessment for high-risk or facial sites. The consultation fee is waived if you proceed, or deducted if you schedule in for a future date.
Do I need a GP referral?+

How long would it take to receive the histology results?+
Lab results usually take between 7 to 10 working days to conclude and be sent back. As soon as we receive it, you shall receive an email containing the results followed by a phone call by the surgeon who carried out your procedure.
