I cannot fault the service at Canova Medical. I phoned them in the morning to inquire about a mole removal and they managed to get me in and have the procedure done by the end of the day. The surgeon was fantastic—very helpful and explained every step of the process clearly before starting. A seamless, stress-free experience from start to finish.

Had an amazing experience for mole removal at Canova. All staff were warm, friendly made me feel at ease. I was very nervous prior to the procedure but Mr Kantappa was wonderful and completely professional. Would recommend this doctor to anyone. The receptionist was also lovely, so thanks! You’ve made me very happy!

The Canova difference

Consultation and removal, by one surgeon.

Many clinics see you after weeks and then send you elsewhere to be treated. We run consultation and procedure on one pathway wherever it's clinically appropriate because our clinics are surgeon-staffed and our procedure rooms are on site.

If your surgeon recommends removal and you're happy to proceed, it's a completed in a single visit, under local anaesthetic.

Consultation

A specialist assessment

Your surgeon examines the mole, confirms the treatment plan and gives a fixed quotation.

Your decision

No pressure

Proceed, book for later or simply take a specialist opinion. It's your choice.

Treatment

Carried out by a surgeon

We are one of the few mole removal specialists in the country

Aftercare

Looking after it

We explain how to care for the area and what to expect, with complimentary aftercare available if needed

About mole

When a mole should be removed.

Moles (melanocytic naevi) are clusters of pigment cells. Most are completely harmless and are removed for comfort or appearance, although some moles should be assessed for atypical changes.

Most adults have 10 to 40 moles. Consider removal if a mole catches or rubs, bleeds, or simply irritates you due to its location or for cosmetic reasons.

More importantly, have a mole checked if it shows any of the ABCDE warning signs; Asymmetry, an irregular Border, two or more Colours, a Diameter over 6mm or it's changing. Our surgeons assess under dermoscopy and send anything uncertain for histology.

Assessed under dermoscopy

Each mole is examined under magnification before any decision. The same approach used in skin-cancer assessment.

Histology for peace of mind

The removed mole can be analysed by a pathologist to confirm it's benign for documented reassurance.

Plastic-surgeon designed treatments

Fine sutures along natural skin lines for the most discreet possible scar.

How we treat it

Two removal methods.

Your surgeon recommends the right method based on the mole's type, size and site or whether histology is needed.

Method / 01 · raised moles

Shave removal

A precise, surface-level removal of a raised mole, often needing no stitches. Quick, with a flat result and the option to send the sample for analysis.

Anaesthetic: local · Stitches: often none
Method / 02 · full removal

Surgical excision

The mole is fully excised and the wound closed with fine sutures. Often the right choice when complete removal and histology matter most.

Anaesthetic: local · Histology: where indicated

Common questions

Mole Removal, answered.

Does mole removal hurt?+

Only the initial local anaesthetic injection stings briefly. After that the area is numb; any tenderness afterwards is mild and managed with simple pain relief like paracetamol.

How much does mole removal cost?+

Your price is confirmed in writing at your consultation and depends on the size, number and type of mole. A shave removal is our most common option with surgical excision for larger or deeper moles. Both with histology options available. A dedicated skin or mole check is also available for peace of mind.

Will the mole be tested?+

Histology isn't always mandatory for clearly benign cosmetic removals, but we often recommend it for complete peace of mind and it's standard for anything with uncertain features.

Will I have a scar?+

Like our inspiration Antonio Canova, we keep artistry and beauty in mind with our work and shall keep you informed each step of the way. Any procedure that removes skin tissue may leave a mark. Because removal is performed by plastic-surgery-trained doctors, it's planned for the most discreet result; shave removal often leaves only a faint flat mark.

Will the mole grow back?+

When removed correctly and completely, the specific mole should not return. New moles can develop elsewhere over time, which is normal.

When should I get a mole checked rather than removed?+

If a mole is new, changing, asymmetric, multi-coloured, larger than 6mm, itching or bleeding, book a check first. Our surgeons assess it under dermoscopy and advise the right step. See also our skin cancer page.

Do I need a GP referral?+

No referral is needed. You can book directly at our London, Wilmslow or Liverpool clinics, typically within days.
