About verruca
What a verruca is, and why they persist.
A verruca is a plantar wart and a growth on the sole of the foot caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They're harmless but can be painful and stubborn.
The virus enters through tiny breaks in the skin and is picked up in warm, damp places like swimming pools and communal showers. A verruca often shows rough skin with tiny black dots that interrupt the normal skin lines, and can hurt when you stand or walk.
Because they're under pressure on the foot, verrucae can be slow to clear and prone to coming back which is why a professional, well-chosen treatment makes a real difference for stubborn ones.

Is verruca removal painful?+
The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic, so you feel only slight pressure during removal. Because verrucae are on the weight-bearing foot, your team will advise on comfortable footwear afterwards.
How much does verruca removal cost?+
Your price is confirmed in writing at your consultation and depends on the size, depth and number of verruca. A shave removal under local anaesthetic is our most common option, with surgical excision for a deep or long-standing one. The consultation fee is waived if you proceed, or deducted from forward booked appointments.
How many sessions will I need?+
Most verrucae are removed in a single visit. A deep or long-standing one may occasionally need a second removal, which your surgeon will discuss with you.
Can a verruca come back?+
Professional treatment significantly reduces the chance of the treated verruca returning, new verrucae can still be picked up as the virus is common in pools and showers.
Why won't shop-bought treatments clear my verruca?+
Over-the-counter treatments can work for small verrucae but often struggle with deep or long-standing ones, because the verruca sits under pressure on the foot. Professional treatment is stronger and better targeted.
Do I need a GP referral?+
