- Are new or growing rapidly
- Are large or become painful
- Change in appearance
It’s important to note that while cysts are benign, there is a rare type of cancerous cysts called a Malignant Cyst. Malignant Cysts can be identified through cells which mutinous material which secretes into the Cyst. These Cysts can be classed into two categories:

How to Remove a Cyst
At Canova Medical Dermatology Clinic, Cyst Removal is a minor surgical procedure we carry out to remove or drain a cyst. You should only look for remove a cyst when either:
- Large or becomes painful: This can happen if the cyst presses on a nerve or restricts movement in a joint.
- In a location where it is bothersome, such as on the face or neck.
- A concern cosmetically.
There are two main types of cyst removal procedures:
- Excision: This is the most common type of cyst removal. This is a minor surgery under local anaesthetic where the doctor will make a small incision in the skin over the cyst and then carefully remove it. The incision will then be closed ensuring a beautiful aesthetic outcome.
- Drainage: This procedure is typically only used for infected cysts. The Cyst and all the contents within the cyst is drained, leaving the area prepared for a future excision.
Cyst removal is typically done under local anesthesia because this means that only the area around the cyst will be numb.
Recovery from cyst removal is usually quick and relatively painless. You may have some small bruising around the incision site for a few hours after the procedure. Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to care for the incision site, such as keeping it clean and dry.
