The secret of eternal youth well known for fighting wrinkles will soon be usable for fighting the more medically important issue of headaches.
The UK medicines regulator announced the decision to approve Botox for the prevention of chronic migraine, representing the first licensing of Botox for this application worldwide.
Botox is a natural purified protein that acts by temporarily blocking the nerve impulses towards the wrinkle-causing muscles, giving the skin a smoother appearance. The anti wrinkle treatment which is also licensed under the brand name of VISTABEL® is ideal for minimising frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet.
Botox is also licensed in the UK for the treatment of uncontrolled blinking of the eyelids; excessive sweating of the armpits and wrist and hand disability associated with stroke in adults.
According to MHRA, the treatment is limited to people who suffer from headaches for a minimum 15 days or more per month with visible signs of migraine related problems.
However, Allergan may yet face difficulties in selling the product unless or until the UK government’s medicines advisory body considers whether it offers value for money.
