Mole Removal offered by Canova Medical Liverpool

Expert Mole Removal at Our Liverpool Clinic

Moles are benign pigmented lesions present on the skin of almost every adult. Most remain entirely harmless throughout life. However, a proportion change over time — particularly in size, shape, colour or surface texture — and a small number may develop into melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.

At Canova Medical in Liverpool, we assess each lesion individually using dermatoscopy before any decision is made regarding treatment. Every patient receives the same considered clinical attention, whether their concern is oncological, cosmetic or practical.

We are proud to offer Liverpool patients fast access to the kind of specialist minor Procedure that NHS pathways frequently cannot deliver within a clinically reassuring timeframe.

When Should a Mole Be Assessed or Removed?

Any mole that has changed, or that causes you concern, deserves professional evaluation. At our Liverpool clinic, we use the established ABCDE framework as part of our clinical assessment:

Asymmetry

One half of the lesion does not mirror the other. Symmetrical moles are far more likely to be benign.

Border

Irregular, scalloped, notched or poorly defined edges warrant closer examination.

Colour

Variation within a single lesion — including shades of brown, black, red, white or blue — is a recognised warning sign.

Diameter

Lesions greater than 6mm in diameter merit assessment, although melanomas may be smaller at the point of first detection.

Evolution

Any change in a pre-existing mole — or any new symptom such as itching, bleeding, crusting or ulceration — should be assessed promptly.

In addition to clinical concerns, many patients request removal for entirely practical reasons: moles in areas of persistent friction, lesions that bleed repeatedly, or those that simply cause cosmetic distress. All are valid reasons to seek assessment at our clinic.

What Happens During Mole Removal at Our Liverpool Clinic?

Step 1 — Clinical Assessment

Your clinician examines the mole in detail, including dermatoscopic evaluation. Clinical history is taken, including how long the lesion has been present and any changes you have noticed. The most appropriate form of removal, if indicated, is agreed with you at this stage.

Step 2 — Local Anaesthetic

The skin around the mole is numbed with a local anaesthetic injection. Patients typically experience a brief, mild stinging sensation. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect — usually within one to two minutes — the area is completely numb.

Step 3 — Excision

We use one of two techniques, selected according to the clinical characteristics of the lesion.

Treatments excision: The mole and a small surrounding margin of normal skin are excised in full. The wound is closed with fine sutures. This is the technique of choice for any lesion with atypical features, as it allows complete histological analysis.

Shave excision: Appropriate for raised, clinically benign lesions where flush removal without sutures is the objective. Healing is by secondary intention and is typically rapid.

Step 4 — Histology (Where Indicated)

Excised tissue may be submitted for formal histopathological analysis at a certified laboratory. Results are returned within seven to fourteen days, providing complete clinical certainty regarding the nature of the lesion.

Step 5 — Aftercare and Suture Removal

Written aftercare instructions are provided at discharge. Where sutures are placed, removal is arranged at a follow-up appointment within seven to fourteen days, depending on the anatomical site. Our Liverpool clinical team remains accessible throughout the recovery period.

Frequently Asked Questions

The local anaesthetic injection causes a brief, mild stinging sensation. The excision itself is entirely painless. Mild tenderness over the subsequent two to three days is normal and is readily managed with standard over-the-counter analgesics such as paracetamol.

All Treatments mole removal produces some degree of scarring. Our clinicians employ meticulous technique and fine suture material to minimise this. Scars typically become significantly less conspicuous over the twelve months following the procedure, and are invariably less noticeable than the original mole.

NHS funding for mole removal is generally limited to lesions where there is a clinical suspicion of malignancy. Removal for cosmetic reasons or for lesions assessed as clinically benign is not routinely commissioned in Merseyside or elsewhere. We offer transparent private pricing with rapid appointments.

Clinical assessment and, where indicated, histopathological analysis are the only reliable means of establishing the nature of a lesion. We strongly advise against relying solely on self-assessment. If you have any concern about a mole, book an appointment at our Liverpool clinic.

Yes. We regularly see patients from across Merseyside and the wider North West, including the Wirral, Southport, St Helens, Warrington, Runcorn, Chester and Wigan. Our clinic is accessible by private vehicle and public transport.

Treatments excision removes the mole in full, including a margin of surrounding tissue, and closes the wound with sutures. It is appropriate for any lesion with atypical features and allows complete histological analysis. Shave excision is a surface-level removal suited to raised, benign lesions. Your clinician will recommend the most appropriate technique at assessment.
