Ganglion cysts are one of the most common soft tissue lumps — but they can cause real discomfort and restrict movement when they press on nearby nerves or joints. At Canova Medical in Wilmslow, our clinicians assess and treat ganglion cysts with a clear, personalised approach.
What Is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion is a benign (non-cancerous) fluid-filled lump that develops near a joint or tendon, most commonly on the wrist, hand, or foot. The fluid inside is thick and jelly-like — similar to the fluid that lubricates your joints (synovial fluid).
Common symptoms:
- A visible, smooth lump near a joint — often the back or front of the wrist
- Aching, weakness, or a dull pain — particularly with repetitive movement
- Tingling or numbness if the ganglion presses on a nerve
- The lump may change in size, sometimes disappearing and reappearing
Common locations:
- Back of the wrist (most common)
- Palm side of the wrist
- Base of a finger
- Top of the foot or ankle
Ganglions are harmless but can be painful and limiting — and they rarely resolve fully on their own.
How Ganglion Removal Works at Canova Medical
Step 1 — Consultation Your doctor will examine the lump, review your symptoms, and discuss your options. Not every ganglion requires immediate treatment — some can be monitored if they’re small and asymptomatic. Your clinician will give you an honest, balanced view.
Step 2 — Treatment Options
- Aspiration — a needle is used to draw out the fluid from the ganglion. A quick, minimally invasive option. The ganglion may recur, as the root (stalk) remains.
- Treatments excision — the ganglion and its stalk are removed entirely under local anaesthetic. This is the most definitive treatment with the lowest recurrence rate.
Step 3 — Aftercare You’ll receive full written aftercare guidance and a follow-up plan. Most patients can use the affected hand or foot normally within a few weeks.
Before & After Expectations
Before treatment: Wear comfortable, loose clothing that gives easy access to the affected area. Inform your doctor of any medications.
After aspiration: The area may be tender and slightly bruised. You can usually return to normal activities within 24–48 hours. There is a reasonable chance the ganglion may return over time.
After Treatments excision: A small wound with sutures. Some temporary stiffness or tenderness is normal. Full recovery typically takes 2–6 weeks depending on the location.
Recovery & Aftercare
- Rest the affected joint for the first few days
- Keep the wound clean and dry
- A splint or bandage may be recommended for wrist ganglia initially
- Attend follow-up appointments for suture removal and progress review
- Gradual return to activity — your doctor will advise based on your specific case

Thank you to Anna, Charlotte and Jennie.
You do an amazing job,

My legs feel constantly smooth and I never think about shaving them. I’ve gone from shaving everyday to every few weeks and that was only after 4 sessions.
I am recommending all my friends to try it, you won’t regret it.
And a bonus is getting to have a chat with the lovely Charlotte who made the whole process even better!

Highly recommended 👌.
Thank you Canova team.
