Your laser hair removal questions answered…
Here’s some information to help you decide if laser hair removal right for you… and if you have any other questions, please do contact us. Our friendly team is here to help you.
What is laser hair removal? How does it work?
Laser hair removal works by gradually heating the dermis to a temperature that damages hair follicles to prevent regrowth, but it leaves the surrounding tissue intact. It’s a quick and very efficient way of permanently reducing hair growth.
The hair follicle has 3 phases in its lifecycle: a growth phase, a regressing phase, and a resting phase. Laser hair removal can only treat hair follicles in the growth phase, and 20% of hair follicles are resting or dormant at any time. For that reason a number of treatments are needed, as you need to wait for the follicles to enter the growth phase.
What skin and hair types can be treated?
The laser machine at Canova Medical can treat ALL hair types and skin types – from blonde hair to dark hair; and all skin colours, including black or Asian skin tones. It is the pigment in the hairs themselves that convert the laser energy into the heat necessary for permanent hair reduction.
You should be aware that very few laser clinics can treat all hair and skin types. The reason Canova Medical can do this is because of our state-of-the-art Soprano Ice laser treatment machine.
How many laser hair removal treatments are usually needed?
Because laser hair removal only targets hair follicles in the growth phase of the lifecycle, repeat treatments will be needed. How many repeat treatments you will need depend on a number of factors, such as hormonal balance and skin sensitivity. We will be able to give you an indication of how many treatments you may need at your Consultation; however we find that most patients need at least 6 to 8 laser hair removal treatments.
For maximum value, you can save money by prepaying a course of 6 treatments: see laser hair removal prices here.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal will permanently treat your existing hair follicles, so in that sense, yes, it is a permanent treatment. However, you may find that new hair follicles may appear in time. As laser hair removal does not prevent new hair follicles from forming, you may require top-up treatments to remove the new hair.
The extent of new follicles appearing depends on your ethnic background and hormonal balance; this will be discussed at your Consultation.
What’s the difference between laser hair removal and IPL hair removal?
Although many people use the terms “laser hair removal” and “IPL hair removal” interchangeably, the technology is quite different.
- Laser hair removal: a highly concentrated beam of light is used. Because the light is so focused, it provides accurate and powerful results.
- IPL (intense pulse light) hair removal: the light energy is far weaker and more diffused. Only a small percentage of the light energy is effective in immobilising the hair follicle, so it’s not as efficient as laser hair removal. (And it can be more painful too especially if you have blonde hair. IPL hair removal is ineffective on Asian skin.)
Are all laser hair removal treatments the same?
Laser hair removal technology has improved dramatically in recent years, and no, not all laser hair removal treatments are the same. Many old laser
hair removal machines have more in common with IPL machines, in that they can be painful and slow.
At Canova Medical Manchester laser clinic, we use Alma Laser’s state-of-the-art Soprano Ice machine.
Here’s how the Soprano Ice compares to traditional hair removal equipment:
|Canova Medical’s Soprano Ice laser technology||Other laser and IPL machines|
|Motion and pain||The applicator is always in motion, with a sweeping movement. The sensation is similar to a hot stone massage.||The applicator has to pause with each ‘zap’ of high dose energy; the sensation is like being flicked with a rubber band… it hurts!|
|Safety and burn risk||This is the safest laser machine currently available, because it works by gradually heating targeted hair follicles with gentle pulses of laser energy.||Because of the high dose of energy that’s applied, there’s a risk of potential burns. Downtime is therefore possible, as is the smell of burning hair.|
|Treatment time||Super quick treatment times, thanks to the sweeping motion of the applicator.||The start-stop motion of the applicator, and having to pause for each ‘zap’, means that treatment times are longer.|
|Thoroughness||The sweeping motion means that there’s a high coverage rate, so ALL hair follicles are targeted.||Because the applicator has a start-stop motion, it’s very easy for the laser operator to miss treating follicles, and you are faced with the inconvenience of having to go back for a repeat treatment.|
|Skin types||Can treat ALL skin types.||Most laser and IPL machines can only treat fair skin with dark hair.|
|Time of year||You can have a laser hair removal treatment at any time of year that’s convenient to you.||Most laser and IPL machines can’t treat tanned skin, so that means that you can only usually have treatments in winter (and not in summer, when you most want permanent hair removal).|
We think of the Soprano Ice as the ‘Ferrari’ of hair removal machines… it’s the very best machine that money can buy. (It’s what you deserve!)
Which parts of the body can have laser hair removal treatments?
Any part of the body can have laser hair removal. Popular areas include:
- Face and neck
- Arms, hands and under-arms
- Torso (back, chest and stomach)
- Groin (bikini, buttocks and Brazilians)
- Legs and feet.

What do I need to do before a laser hair removal treatment?
Good news: there is nothing that you need to do (or avoid) before a laser hair removal treatment.
Please do not shave/wax/tweeze/etc. before your appointment: it’s important that we can evaluate your hair type, and where it’s growing.
On your first appointment, allow an additional 30 minutes for your Non-Surgical Consultation. This is where we’ll discuss your medical history; examine the area to be treated; and discuss your treatment plan. This is also your opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Who administers the laser hair removal treatment?
You will be in the excellent hands of our very experienced Nurse, Nina Hayhurst, at Canova Medical. She is specialised in cosmetic procedures and has 15 years of nursing experience. Read more about the team at Canova Medical.
What happens during the laser hair removal treatment?
Because you will have had a half-hour Consultation with your laser hair removal specialist prior to your treatment, they will know exactly what to do. They’ll make sure that you’re happy and comfortable… the treatment itself is very quick. No local anaesthetic is required.
You’ll be given a pair of dark glasses to wear during the treatment, to protect your eyes. The hair removal specialist will then shave the area that will be treated, and apply a cooling gel.
The tip of the applicator is swept over the area to be treated; it’s constantly in motion, like a paintbrush. The sensation is virtually pain-free, and feels more like a hot stone massage.
Does it hurt to have laser hair removal treatments?
The revolutionary Soprano Ice laser machine at Canova Medical is virtually pain free. (Yes, really… we’ve tried it!)
In fact, because the applicator sweeps over the area in a paintbrush-like motion, it feels more like a hot stone massage. The heat of the laser is counteracted by the sweeping motion, plus the tip is super-cool. (It’s cooled to -3 degrees centigrade, but the overall effect is warm and pleasant.)
Are there any possible side effects? What happens after the treatment?
There are no side effects, and there is no recovery time. You can resume your normal activities right away.
It’s important that you use a sunscreen if you’re going to be outside in the sun.
Other than that, you’re able to enjoy your regular perfume, deodorant or moisturiser as per usual.
What kind of results can I expect?
After the treatment, it may seem like your hair is continuing to grow: this is just the hair slowly coming out of the follicle. This hair will fall out in about a week, and then your skin will be lovely and smooth!
The hair follicles that weren’t during the growth phase of their lifecycle will eventually start growing, so you’ll need some repeat treatments to target those follicles. For maximum value, you can save money by prepaying a course of 6 treatments: see laser hair removal prices here.
What if I have any other questions?
Please contact the friendly team at Canova Medical – we’d be delighted to help you and answer any questions you may have.

What’s the next step?
The next step to enjoying the convenience of being hair-free all the time is to arrange a Consultation. This will last for half an hour, and will be with the professional who will be administering your treatment. They will take the time to get to know you and your desired outcomes; obtain your medical history; and make recommendations based on your specific needs. There is a one-off £60 consultation fee for non-surgical treatments. If you decide to go ahead with your treatment, this fee will be deducted from the final price.
Why is there a consultation fee?
It is normal for medical specialists to charge a fee for their time; those that do not charge a fee use the consultation as a promotion. So when you have a consultation at Canova Medical Manchester laser clinic, you will receive our professional, medical opinion, as you would expect from a medical specialist.
The consultation fee is a one-off charge: there are no further consultation fees, neither for your follow-up review appointments, nor for any other treatments you may consider in future. Once you’ve seen us, you’ll be part of the Canova family.
100% Satisfaction Guarantee
When you pay for a Consultation, you want to make sure that you get value for money. And for us, that means that the nurse gives you detailed and personalised advice based on your own, unique needs. (Whereas at other Clinics, you may receive a sales pitch from a Patient Coordinator with no medical training.) At Canova Medical, many patients find the Consultation so in-depth that they take notes, as there’s so much good advice on offer.
However, you’ll receive a refund (without you needing to ask for it) if you are not a good candidate for the treatment. This way you can try Canova Medical risk-free to see if we’re right for you.
