Otoplasty (Ear surgery)
Have prominent ears been bothering you since your school days?
Free Consultation Available
You can read more about it here.
Whatever your age, prominent and protruding ears can be distressing. Although the ear is designed to stick out at an angle of about 20 to 35 degrees, in a small number of people the angle may be greater than 35 degrees, resulting in protruding ears. About 1% of people in the UK think that their ears stick out too much*, so ear surgery (called otoplasty, pinnaplasty or ear pinning) is routine in patients of all ages. *Source: NHS

Are there different techniques for ear pinning?
Otoplasty, ear pinning, pinning back the ears and pinnaplasty all refer to the surgical procedure where the cartilage is removed or remodelled to position the ear closer to the head. The terms otoplasty, ear pinning, pinning back the ears and pinnaplasty are interchangeable, and Canova Medical can provide you with this ear surgery.
Ear splinting is a different procedure that is often used for babies under six months of age. It involves resetting the soft cartilage and using a splint to keep the ear in the new position. Please note that Canova Medical does not offer this treatment.
What can I expect at the Consultation?
As well as understanding exactly how you want your ears to look, your Surgeon will assess your overall physical health. Any medical conditions will be discussed and evaluated, to ensure that you are a good candidate for otoplasty.
What’s the youngest age otoplasty will be performed on?
At Canova Medical, we only perform surgery on people aged 18 years and older.
Who performs the ear pinning surgery?
Mr Maurizio Persico (Consultant Plastic Surgeon) performs the ear surgery consultations at our Manchester clinic. You can read about Mr Persico here.
Where does the ear surgery take place?
Your Consultations will take place at our Manchester clinic, where the ambience is elegant yet relaxed. For the maximum in discretion you will never see another patient.
The surgery itself will be carried out a local private hospital. You’ll be given full details at your Consultation.
How do I prepare for the otoplasty?
You will be fully informed about what you can eat and drink before the procedure, and any precautions regarding medications and smoking.
These are guidelines that you should follow to help ensure that your surgery will go smoothly and without any complications.
What happens during the otoplasty ear surgery?
Ear cosmetic surgery, or otoplasty, is a surgical procedure that sets prominent ears back closer to the head or reduces the size of large ears.
The Surgeon makes a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. He then sculpts the cartilage and bends it back toward the head. Occasionally, the surgeon will remove a small piece of cartilage to provide a more natural-looking fold when the surgery is complete. Stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape.
Sometimes your Surgeon may use another technique that involves a similar incision in the back of the ear. The skin is removed and stitches are used to fold the cartilage back on itself to reshape the ear without removing cartilage.
Even when only one ear appears to protrude, this kind of cosmetic surgery is usually performed on both ears for a better balance.
In most cases, ear surgery will leave a faint scar in the back of the ear that will fade with time. The ear surgery usually takes about two hours.
What happens after the ear pinning surgery? And how long is the recover time?
The patient’s head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage immediately following surgery to promote healing. The ears may throb or ache a little for a few days, but this can be relieved by medication.
Within a few days, a lighter head dressing similar to a headband, will replace the bulky bandages. Be sure to follow your Surgeon’s directions for wearing this dressing, especially at night.
Stitches are usually removed, or will dissolve, in about ten days.
Any activity in which the ear might be bent — such as contact sports — should be avoided for approximately two months.
Most adults can go back to work about five days after surgery.
What sort of results can I expect from the otoplasty?
Most patients, young and old alike, are thrilled with the results of ear cosmetic surgery. But do keep in mind that the goal is improvement, not perfection. Don’t expect both ears to match perfectly: perfect symmetry is both unlikely and unnatural in ears.
You will have discussed the procedure with your Surgeon before the operation, and he will have discussed with you what kind of results you can expect.
You are bound to enjoy the look and feeling of having normal, neat ears for the first time!
