Is the NHS waiting time too long for you?

Hip pain can develop at any time, ranging from young adults to older people. Usually the age at which you experience hip pain, fits into a loose pattern.

  • Younger age: Sports injury or trauma related, early arthritis, radiating pain (from spine or knee), abductor tendinopathy.
  • Middle age: AVN, early OA, sequelae of trauma or hip conditions, radiating pain (from spine or knee), trochanteric bursitis/ abductor tendinopathy
  • Older age: sequelae of trauma, OA, radiating pain (from spine or knee), trochanteric bursitis/ abductor tendinopathy

You may have seen or tried alternative treatments. This could range from pain killers, optimising medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease, chest/ lung conditions), walking aids, losing weight, physiotherapy, injection therapies, Ostenil (hyaluronic acid) or steroid/ cortisone. If those treatments did not help you then a hip replacement surgery might be the solution. This has been reported as one of the main break throughs in medicine and has been proven as one of the best operations to improve the quality of life of patients.

It is essentially indicated if you have significant painful symptoms as it is primarily a pain-relieving procedure. It can also improve your function as, once you remove the painful stimulus from the hip, it should move better, hence allowing you to walk again pain-free and even run in some instances.

A hip replacement removes the degenerative hip joint and replaces it with an artificial joint. The prosthesis can either be cemented into position or be uncemented. At Canova Medical in Wilmslow, we will provide a bespoke solution after discussing with you the pros and cons of each.

What can I expect at the Consultation with the Surgeon?

At your one-hour Consultation with your Surgeon, he will assess your overall physical health. Any medical conditions will be discussed and evaluated to ensure that you are a good candidate for hip surgery. You need to be fit and healthy to ensure that the operation will be successful.

The Surgeon will also discuss in detail the kind of results and outcomes you can expect from your surgery. Once he is happy that you’re a good candidate for hip replacement, he will inform you about how to prepare for this surgery.

Who performs the hip replacement?

He has published and presented both nationally and internationally at Orthopaedic meetings. Mr Shah sub-specialises in Lower limb arthroplasty, Revision and Infections at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

How do I prepare for the hip surgery?

Cheshire Cosmetic Clinic
Relax in the elegant surroundings of our Cheshire cosmetic surgery clinic.

You will be fully informed about what you can eat and drink before the procedure, and any precautions regarding medications and smoking.

These are guidelines that you should follow to help ensure that your surgery will go smoothly and without any complications.

What if I can’t have a hip replacement surgery?

We occasionally come across patients who are not suitable or are unable to have surgery due to their medical conditions being significant or their weight may be prohibitive to surgery. In these very small number of cases we do explore the possibility of nerve ablation therapy. This carried out in partnership with one of my Pain consultants. They firstly anaesthetise the nerves in turn to identify the ones which are causing the pain. Once identified those specific nerves are targeted and ablated.

Can your hip pain get better?

YES…provided we identify the source of it.

Our surgeon therefore ensures that all patients are investigated prior to any treatment being advocated so we address the source of the problem and not just the symptoms. If you have been suffering with hip pain then you may have already looked at different options to help yourself. Some of these alternative treatments for hip pain include: Glucosamine or Turmeric tablets, various gels like Flexiseq and also some other remedies. Unfortunately, we do not have any evidence in the medical literature to advise us whether or not these treatments are helpful or not.

What if I have any other questions?

What’s the next step?

If you do not want to wait for the NHS to arrange your surgery, the next step is to arrange a Consultation with us. This will be with the Surgeon who’ll be performing your surgery. He will take the time to get to know you and your desired outcomes; obtain your medical history; and make recommendations based on your specific needs.
