Facial sagging is inevitable as we age — it is caused by the breakdown of tissue in various areas of the face, most especially the jaw, marking the loss of the chiselled appearance we once had in our youth. Although the ageing process is irreversible, this is where jawline dermal fillers, or simply ‘jawline fillers’, come into play. These fillers can be injected into the lower areas of the face to produce a more sculpted and contoured jawline, making you look several years younger in no time.
At Canova Medical in Wilmslow, Cheshire, we use Juvederm, one of the best fillers on the market, to help you regain your youthful appearance once more. With our highly-experienced team of specialists in charge of administering the treatment, you can rest assured that you will always be in good hands from the start of the procedure right through to the end.
Jawline fillers, explained
Jawline fillers are essentially dermal fillers that are injected into the jaw in order to improve facial symmetry and proportion, making them an effective non-surgical alternative to jaw implants. These injections are composed of hyaluronic acid (HA) gels, which mimic the naturally-occurring HA our body produces to provide our skin cells hydration and support. Injection of this synthetic substance into our skin increases HA levels and encourages the production of elastin and collagen, which are key proteins needed for smooth, healthy skin.
Jawline fillers can be used to:
- Improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles: Fillers work to “fill in” areas in the face where volume has been lost, adding plumpness to the underlying tissue while smoothening out fine lines and wrinkles. This makes the skin look much firmer and supple.
- Enhance chin proportions for a sharp jawline: Injecting fillers along the mandible (lower jaw) stimulates the separation of the neck from the jawline, improving chin proportions and producing a more defined, contoured lower jaw.
- Reduce saggy jowls: Due to a significant reduction in collagen production as we age, the skin beneath our jawline gradually loses elasticity over time, causing it to sag — these areas of saggy skin are known as jowls. Jawline fillers can help tighten this loose skin and improve its appearance.
- Balance facial asymmetry: Facial asymmetry can happen when one side of your jawline looks less pronounced than the other — fillers can help balance the proportions out by adding more contour to the side of your jawline that is less defined, giving rise to a more symmetrical appearance.
- Soften angular jawlines: If a softer jawline is what you are aiming for, jawline fillers can also help you achieve that by adding more fullness to the lower jaw area to make it look a lot less contoured.
These fillers can also be used in conjunction with anti-wrinkle treatments to produce an even more apparent facial slimming effect by relaxing the jaw muscles. An in-depth consultation with one of our medical experts can help determine the right treatment(s) for your situation.
What is the jawline filler treatment like?
The entire procedure may take up to 15 to 20 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the area being treated. A small quantity of the HA filler will first be injected into your jaw to see if it causes any reaction, after which the remaining gel will be administered. The injected area will then be massaged to ensure the fillers are properly set in place. This procedure is typically painless but you may feel a slight tightening sensation while the filler is being administered.
You can expect to see a noticeable change in your appearance almost immediately; however, it may take a couple of days (usually less than a week) to see the full results. Some side effects such as swelling or bruising may also be experienced in the treated area but these should gradually subside over time. Since no downtime for recovery is required, you can resume your normal activities right after treatment is complete. As with any cosmetic procedure, it is essential that you get it done by a specialist who is highly trained in administering injectable fillers.
Am I a suitable candidate for jawline fillers?
While nearly everyone can get jawline fillers, it is ultimately your face and bone structure that will determine where and how the filler should be placed to ensure you get the results you need. This is why it is important to have an in-depth discussion with your doctor prior to the procedure. Additionally, do make it a note to give sufficient detail about your goals and expectations for this treatment during your consultation. That way, you can be sure to get the results you want and be satisfied with the outcome.
It is also important to inform your doctor of any known allergies you may be having and of any medications you are currently taking as these may interfere with the success of the treatment. Additionally, it is strongly advised that pregnant women postpone getting jawline fillers until after giving birth.

How long can I expect my results to last?
Since jawline fillers are biodegradable and only temporary, they will eventually break down and be absorbed by the body. However, you can expect your results to last for up to two years. In order to ensure your results are maintained and kept for much longer, it is recommended to schedule touch-up sessions every one to two years. It is imperative that you also attend check-up appointments with your doctor at least twice a year to gauge the progress of your treatment.
Other non-surgical alternatives
If you are not too sure about what procedure to go for just yet, there are other non-surgical alternatives you can consider for getting a sculpted jawline. Of course, whatever treatment you eventually proceed with will ultimately be determined through a consultation with your doctor.
Vampire facelift
Not to be confused with vampire facials, vampire facelifts make use of both HA fillers and Platelet-Rich Plasma, also known as PRP (plasma with a higher concentration of platelets derived from a patient’s blood sample) to help sculpt the jawline, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and lift saggy skin while stimulating collagen and elastin production. Think of it as a more enhanced version of jawline fillers that aims to restore more radiance to your facial complexion. This non-surgical procedure takes around one to two hours to complete.
Much like jawline fillers, the HA fillers used here are injected into the treatment area followed by the PRP injections. Some redness may be experienced after the procedure but this will gradually subside over time. Near immediate results can be seen thanks to the fillers, however, it may up to two weeks to see the final results as increased collagen and elastin production is stimulated.
The results from the vampire facelift can last for about one to two years. While you would need to attend top-up sessions every now and then, you will find that the need for these sessions decreases as continuous protein synthesis takes place within the body.
Botox injections
While Botox is more commonly known to be a treatment used to target fine lines and wrinkles, it can help produce a more sculpted jawline, too. Botox injections are a painless, non-invasive, and non-surgical alternative that only takes between 15 to 30 minutes to complete.
Botox is most often used to give rise to a more pronounced V-line in the face by slimming down the jawline while making the cheekbones stand out more. An added advantage is that it can help relieve jaw pain and discomfort that may be experienced as a result of teeth grinding. Unlike jawline fillers, however, you won’t be able to see results right away with Botox injections. In fact, you would need to wait for at least eight weeks in order to see any noticeable change. While these results may last up to a year, you would still need to attend top-up sessions every three to six months in order to maintain them.
Additionally, compared to jawline fillers, Botox does not actually address facial volume loss but only targets facial definition. This means that even after achieving a sculpted jawline with Botox injections, you may still notice some fine lines and wrinkles in and around the treatment area.
