What causes hyperhidrosis?
It is the over-activity of eccrine sweat glands in the skin that causes excessive sweating. These glands are found all over the body, but are highly concentrated in the armpits, as well as on the palms of hands and soles of the feet.
Hyperhidrosis usually starts during the teens and twenties, and around 1% of the population have some form of hyperhidrosis issue.
What are the different hyperhidrosis treatment options?
If you have hyperhidrosis, you’ve probably tried a number of hyperhidrosis treatments already. These may include prescription antiperspirants, alternative remedies (e.g. acupuncture, herbal remedies, hypnosis and relaxation techniques), and more.
If you’re reading this web page, chances are you’ve already tried a number of these hyperhidrosis treatment options, and they haven’t worked for you.
The next step is to use Botox for excessive sweating treatments. This treatment option for sweating is long lasting, too: it can last for up to 6.5 months.
What is Botox?
‘Botox’ is the common name for Botulinum Toxin, which is a protein and neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Botox has been used in cosmetic procedures for more than 22 years in millions of patients worldwide. It has both US FDA approval as well as European license approval.
Whilst Botox is frequently used for wrinkle injections, it is also a long-lasting way to treat excessive sweating.
Whilst the term ‘Botox’ has become a generic term for this type of injection, not all clinics use ‘real’ Botox. There are a number of cheaper brands, but they don’t give you the same long-lasting results as genuine Botox®. At Canova Medical, we use ‘real’ Botox®, which is a registered Trademark from Allergan.
How does Botox treat hyperhidrosis? And how long does the treatment last for?
Injecting small doses of Botox into the skin blocks the actions of the nerves that supply the eccrine glands. This prevents the glands from producing sweat.
Botox is a long-lasting excessive-sweating treatment, but it does not cure excessive sweating permanently. This is because new nerve endings will grow to replace the blocked ones, so the treatment will wear off over time.
How long the treatment lasts varies from person to person, but it can last for up to 6.5 months.

How do I prepare for the hyperhidrosis treatment?
There’s nothing that you need to do, other than arrange a Consultation and then come to the Canova Medical clinic.
What happens during the hyperhidrosis treatment?
First of all, a marker or pencil is used to identify the treatment areas.
A very fine needle (similar to an acupuncture needle) is then used to inject small amounts of Botox into the areas surrounding the over active sweat glands.
The treatment takes about 30 minutes, depending on how parts of your body are being treated for hyperhidrosis.
The discomfort is very brief, and you’ll be invited to stay for a while in the Reception area after your treatment, as we want you to be sure that you’re feeling 100% before you leave.
You’ll have the area to yourself for at least half an hour (so there’s no chance of you being seen by anyone).
You’ll be free to enjoy refreshments while you relax… and we particularly recommend that you try the Italian coffee. The coffee is freshly made with a proper machine (the same used in Italian Caffeteria), and is served in fine Villeroy & Boch bone china cups. The finishing touch: an Italian Ferrero Rocher chocolate. E’ delizioso!
What happens after the hyperhidrosis treatment?
You will be provided with helpful instructions after your Botox hyperhidrosis treatment.
These instructions will help to minimise any side effects; and extend the longevity of your treatment.
How soon will I notice an improvement with the excessive sweating?
You should notice a significant improvement within 4 weeks of your treatment.
The treatment will last up to 6.5 months, though this varies from person to person. Therefore you will need to return to the clinic every once in a while for the Nurse to evaluate the progress of your treatment and to recommend a top up when it becomes necessary. There is no charge for these follow-up Consultations.

Please contact the friendly team at Canova Medical – we’d be delighted to help you and answer any questions you may have.
What’s the next step?
The next step to stopping embarrassing and annoying excess sweating is to arrange a Consultation.
