PIP implants are silicone breast prosthesis manufactured by the French company Poly Implant Prothese. As early as 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted a warning to consumers about using these implants. At the end of 2000, the French government also posted a warning to women who had received PIPs to have them removed.

The prosthesis had an unusually high rupture rate and contained industrial-grade, not the required medical-grade, silicone. Despite these findings the PIPs continued to be manufactured until March 2010. It is estimated over 45,000 women in the UK are affected by these prosthesis.

Anyone concerned about her breast prosthesis needs to, first, confirm she received PIP breast implants. This can be done be reviewing medical records or scheduling an appointment with her doctor or surgeon who performed the operation. If she did receive this type of implant, the doctor can conduct tests to check the status of the implant. If the implant has not ruptured, the doctor will want to talk about whether she wants to replace or simply remove the PIP implant.

Some symptoms to keep an eye out for include: lumpiness or swelling of or around the breast, deflation of the breast, redness, tenderness, and pain or sensitivity. If she experiences any of these symptoms, make visiting the doctor a priority regarding the safety of the implant.

What Are The Options If Considering Replacing PIP Implants?

If she is considering replacing her old prosthesis, she needs to research what type of implant to use. Allergan Natrelle is a premium product to use to replace her PIP implants. A skin peel sounds rather dramatic and traumatic, but in fact the only drama you’ll experience is when you see the results and jump for joy, as Simon Payne discovered when he underwent the treatment at Canova Medical in Wilmslow

We asked Nina Hayhurst, Clinic Nurse at Canova Medical, to talk us through the treatments.

 

What was the condition of Simon’s skin before he had
the treatments?


It was very tired looking. Some areas were quite oily and some areas were combination. On the cheeks he had some problem areas; a build up of fatty deposits when you get those little white spots. Simon is also a smoker, which doesn’t help with the condition of his skin, hence why it looked very tired and dull.

Why was the course of skin peels a good option for Simon?

First of all for Simon, being the age he is, the anti ageing properties can reduce the little fine lines. Because his skin was in some areas quite dry and in other areas quite oily the peel helps with that and finally it helps to breakdown the problem he had with these little white spots.

What results can Simon expect from the course of peels?

Already, he’s mentioned that he’s seen a difference in the texture. He also tells me that people who didn’t know he has had the peels have said that he looks really well. Even though we’re only half way through the course, the appearance of his skin is much brighter and much more toned.

Now I’m strengthening the peel to target the problem areas, like the little white spots. Eventually it will break that down and get rid of those for him.

How long does the course last?

The full course is six peels, over a period of twelve weeks.

Following that, I always say to patients that to maintain a good healthy appearance and to keep the collagen reproducing they will need a regular maintenance peel once every two to three months depending on their skin and how they feel.

What further/other treatments would you recommend for Simon’s skin type?


We offer the wrinkle relaxing treatments, which help the appearance of the skin. For now, I think the peels are the best option and treatment for Simon. For him, I advise, because he’s a smoker (and if he can’t quit!) to keep on top of it and maintain it – as his skin is looking better each time.

When you think of the term ‘Skin Peel’, does the TV show ‘Ten Years Younger’ spring to mind? Bright red, sore and peeling skin… the necessity to stay indoors till your face looks human again? However, the reality of the treatment offered by Canova Medical in Wilmslow is very different. Simon Payne writes

Well, that’s all well and fine – but why

For some people this action is inhibited by the impact of the P.Acnes bacteria, which causes acne and breakouts. “This is why skin can start to look a little crêpey and tired.

“The Agera RX formula effectively does a deep exfoliation, without the use of mechanical means, which can damage or tear the skin.

“Six treatments over an 18 week period are recommended, followed by regular maintenance treatments. The solution contains Retinol, which in the first treatment works on all the dead skin from the upper epidermis. In the treatments that follow the solution can then penetrate more deeply and start to work on the dermal layer.

Peptides then stimulate collagen and elastin production, which really work to rejuvenate the skin. People come back after only the second treatment so thrilled with what they can already see as a positive improvement. After six treatments every single client has been over the moon!”

So, now I know the science behind it… but how does it feel?

At our first meeting Nina undertakes a detailed skin analysis during the consultation. She takes time to understand my skin as this

is vital to ensure she adjusts the treatment to meet its individual needs – this is not a one-size-fits-all approach, all skin types and needs are treated differently.

The treatment itself is very pleasant. Firstly she does a deep facial cleanse and then applies a ‘pre-peel’ lotion to lift out all the oils from my skin. She then gently brushed the peel solution onto the skin and allowed it to dry before repeating with more peel solution.

The peel solution created a mild tingling; a bit like I’d been in the sun a few minutes too long, but not unpleasant. After removing the solution Nina then applied a peptide serum followed by an enriched moisturiser and advised I kept my face away from water for the next 24 hours to allow it to penetrate most deeply.

My skin felt amazing, not red or tight, just soft and fresh. I can’t wait for the next treatment… watch this space and I’ll tell you all about it!

This month we had the chance to meet Dr. Gabriele Travia, Clinical Director of Canova Medical, to ask him more about the new cosmetic clinic in Wilmslow, Cheshire and how non-surgical treatments have changed the approach to facial rejuvenation.

Q: Tell us something about you and your professional background.

A: I was born in Rome, the eternal city, where I completed all my medical education. I was always passionate about Cosmetic and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, so once I had my Medical Licence I started my surgical training by joining experienced surgeons who specialised in both fields. In the last three years I have performed in the operating theatre as an assistant surgeon in more than 600 operations. Moreover, I was responsible for all our patients who required non-surgical cosmetic treatments. At the same time I started my own private work in cosmetic surgery and non-surgical cosmetic procedures within several clinics in Rome and in the last three years I have treated 900 patients. From 2008 I became fully registered with the UK General Medical Council (GMC).

Q: Why Canova Medical?

A: In Italy only Doctors are entitled to perform any kind of non-surgical cosmetic treatments, and more importantly, our relationship with the patients is one-to-one, from their initial consultation right through to their aftercare. Q: What kinds of treatments are available in your clinic?

Q: Please tell us the differences between Botox and dermal fillers.

A: This is a very frequent question; there is a lot of mix-up regarding these two treatments. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers such as Juvederm ® and Restylane ® are the safest and most popular. It is a natural substance which is present throughout our body and skin but its levels gradually decrease with time and age. We can therefore replace it with a highly purified gel in order to fill in the folds and wrinkles, or in order to enhance the volume of specific facial areas such as lips, cheeks or jaw lines. Botox ® is the brand name for a purified protein that acts as a muscle relaxant. This can be used to reduce the so called dynamic wrinkles, the ones caused by muscle contraction. It is very effective on the upper third of the face, so it is possible to treat frown lines (worry lines between the brows), horizontal forehead lines and crows feet (smile lines around the eyes).

Q: Last question before leaving: what are, in your opinion, the pros of these treatments that so many people ask for?

A: The main benefits are that they are less aggressive, carry less risk and are less inexpensive than any surgical procedure but are still very effective. Nowadays, it is possible to treat beauty flaws that once needed surgery only (e.g. forehead wrinkles, lip enhancement, face contouring etc). The results are generally long lasting but temporary, so patients can decide to modulate the desired effects they wish to achieve over a period of time.
