Blepharoplasty (Eyelid and eye bag surgery)
Is loose, droopy skin around your area making you look old?
It’s normal for the skin above and below your eyes to begin sagging as you age. But unfortunately this can give one the appearance of looking sad, old or tired. In fact, this is very common issue in the UK: the surgery that deals with this condition, called blepharoplasty (or an eye lift), is the second most popular type of cosmetic surgery in the UK*, after breast augmentation.

Surgery for eyelid drop and eye bag removal is effective as it can really lift your appearance. Plus the scarring is either minimal, or completely invisible.
There are two types of blepharoplasty surgery, and both are available at Canova Medical in Wilmslow:
- Upper blepharoplasty: This surgery is performed on the eyelid. This is when excess skin and wrinkles above the eye cause a tired, droopy look.
- Lower blepharoplasty: Eye bag removal deals with the loose skin underneath your eyes, which can be caused by ageing, smoking or sun exposure.
At Canova Medical, we’ll take the time to get to know you, and discover exactly what you’d like to achieve from your eye lift surgery.

Your blepharoplasty questions answered…
Here’s some information to help you decide if blepharoplasty surgery is right for you, though this will be covered in far more detail at your Consultation.
If you have any other questions, please do contact us: our friendly team is here to help guide you.
I was quite comfortable and at ease during my first visit. All my questions were answered and everything was explained very professionally. Mr Persico made me very comfortable and showed me everything and asked me what I needed.
I probably wouldn’t have come to a cosmetic clinic without a bit of research. Fortunately I did and I had been also recommended which does help!
Coming to Canova Medical made me feel so much better with myself. I’m really pleased with the results of the procedure I needed done. So now I’m happy about putting my makeup on, I feel a lot better myself.
I must say that you are really worried when you go in for a treatment like this. If you are younger you don’t think about consequences. You don’t think about your own body, you think about what you want to look like.
When you get older, the important thing is what can happen after surgery, and being reassured and told the true facts help you making the right decision.
I can honestly say that I was really at ease. I think it’s a nice, friendly and professional service and the whole team is great. It’s a nice environment and because it’s not such a huge place I think it helps to have a more personal touch.
I have already recommended the clinic to a few people, they were amazed by my new look and asked what have I had done and where I had it done.

What can I expect at the Consultation?
Your Surgeon will assess your overall physical health. Any medical conditions will be discussed and evaluated, to ensure that you are a good candidate for eyelift surgery.
Then, after a careful examination of your eyes and eyelids, the Surgeon can immediately approve or disapprove your desired blepharoplasty procedure. He will also discuss the procedure at length and explain the risks involved.
Who performs the eye lid and eye bag surgery?
Mr Maurizio Persico (Consultant Plastic Surgeon) consults on eye lid surgery and eye bag surgery at our Wilmslow and Preston clinics. You can read about Mr Persico here.
Where does the blepharoplasty surgery take place?
Your Consultations will take place at our Cheshire clinic, where the ambience is elegant yet relaxed. For the maximum in discretion you will never see another patient.
The eyelift surgery itself will be carried out a local private hospital. You’ll be given full details at your Consultation.
How do I prepare for eyelid and eyebag surgery?
You will be fully informed about what you can eat and drink before the procedure, and any precautions regarding medications and smoking.
These are guidelines that you should follow to help ensure that your surgery will go smoothly and without any complications.
What happens during the blepharoplasty surgery? How much scarring will there be?
Blepharoplasty surgery usually takes 1 to 2 hours, and the process depends on the type of eye surgery you have chosen:
Eyelid blepharoplasty usually involves the removal of excess skin, and possibly excess fat. This starts with an incision that follows the creases of your upper eyelids.
Once the skin has been separated from the underlying fat tissue, the Surgeon can easily remove the excess fat and trim sagging skin and muscle matter.
The incision is closed with very fine sutures. Because the incision is in a crease (and also very small), the scarring is minimal.
For lower eyelid blepharoplasty and eye bag removal, a different technique is used. This is called “transconjuctival blepharoplasty”. It involves making an incision right inside the lower lid to remove the excess fat without leaving any visible scar on the exterior.
What happens after the eye lift surgery? And how long is the recovery time?
Blepharoplasty surgery patients can usually go home on the same day.
You can expect to have some bruising and swelling around the eyes. This can last from 2 to 4 weeks, depending on how fast your body heals itself. If you wish to speed up the healing process and minimise the swelling, you can apply a cold compress to your eyes.
You will initially be prescribed painkillers. And when your eyes feel dry and/or itchy, you may wish to use the eye ointment that your Surgeon has recommended.
Common side effects after this kind of eye surgery include feeling sensitive to light, and blurry or double vision. These side effects will disappear in time, as soon as the eyes adjust and heal.
You will need to protect your eyes when you go outside. You will also need to keep your activities, especially reading or watching TV, to a minimum to avoid stressing the eyes too much. You also need to avoid strenuous activities for as much as possible for the 4 weeks following your eye surgery.

What’s the next step?
The next step to an eyelift is to arrange a Consultation. This will last for one hour and will be with the Surgeon who’ll be performing your eye lift procedure. He will take the time to get to know you and your desired outcomes; obtain your medical history; and make recommendations based on your specific needs. There is a one-off £120 Consultation fee for surgical treatments.
Why is there a Consultation fee?
It is normal for medical specialists to charge a fee for their time; those that do not charge a fee use the Consultation as a promotion. So when you have a Consultation at Canova Medical cosmetic surgery clinic in Wilmslow, Cheshire, you will receive our professional, medical opinion, as you would expect from a medical specialist.
The Consultation fee is a one-off charge: there are no further Consultation fees, neither for your follow-up review appointments, nor for any other treatments you may consider in future. Once you’ve seen us, you’ll be part of the Canova family.
100% Satisfaction Guarantee
When you pay for a Consultation, you want to make sure that you get value for money. And for us, that means that the Surgeon gives you detailed and personalised advice based on your own, unique needs. (Whereas at other Clinics, you may receive a sales pitch from a Patient Coordinator with no medical training.) At Canova Medical, many patients find the Consultation so in-depth that they take notes, as there’s so much good advice on offer.
However, you’ll receive a refund (without you needing to ask for it) if you are not a good candidate for cosmetic surgery. This way you can try Canova Medical risk-free to see if we’re right for you.
